The 7 Best Markets of the French Riviera

French Riviera fruit markets

Local street markets are one of the most charming and authentic tourist attractions of any destination. There is no better way to experience an area than with local cuisines and crafts, and you’ll be spoiled for choice in the South of France. From fresh fish to vibrant vegetables, regional cheeses to delicate ornaments, the temptations are truly endless. Most kick off at around 8 o’clock in the morning and remain open until lunch time. However, there are some seasonal evening markets too, which usually pop up during the summer.

Here are our 7 favourite markets to add to your travel itinerary on your next Mediterranean getaway.

1.     Marché des Halles, Menton

Spanning across a street on the outskirts of the old town of Menton, this bustling market offers an explosion of colours and flavours. Live like the locals and come here to buy your fruit, veg, meats, cheese and more – all served up by friendly, smiling vendors.

2.     Marché du Cours Saleya, Nice

The famous Marché du Cours Saleya was named one of the country’s Special Markets by France’s National Council for the Culinary Arts. A true foodie’s paradise, this open-market is abloom with stunning flowers as well as fruits, vegetables, nuts, soups and other mouth-watering delicacies.  Munch on olives and sundried tomatoes as you browse, and enjoy a drink or two while you’re at it.

3.     Marché Provencal, Antibes

Whether you have a shopping list or simply fancy a wander, the Marché Provencal in Antibes is a must-visit. Taste plenty of home-made cuisine and experiment with truffle, seafood and a variety of fruits and vegetables.

4.     Marché Forville, Cannes

The Marché Forville in Cannes is a traditional French indoor market that specialises in quality produce harvested by the local farmers. Expect fish fresh off the boat, seasonal vegetables, cold meats and more. If you favour the flavours of Italy, there is an Italian section where you can pick up ravioli, pasta sauces and polenta. There is truly something for everyone at these lively stalls.

5.     Morning Markets, Cours in Grasse

Stroll along Cours Honoré Cresp and visit the hundred stallholders that sell gourmet Provençal flavours, as well as flowers, accessories, jewellery and other handmade treasures. If you are a magpie who loves collecting precious keepsakes, you’ll be in heaven here.

6.     Place des Lys Market, Saint-Tropez
